Maturity

A blogger friend celebrated his birthday yesterday and he mentioned the word "maturity". I remember posting something about it on my Tumblr blog and so I decided to share some views about it on his post's comment section.

Here's the quote. I don't know who said it but...

"MATURITY has more to do with what types of experiences you’ve had and what you’ve learned from them.. and less to do with how many birthdays you’ve celebrated."

I remember one time, I had a little spat with my parents. It was a little issue, blown out of proportion. I really believed that my stand is correct and that I did nothing wrong. Of course, the problem was solved immediately and we came to an understanding. I'm glad that both my parents were willing to listen to me before passing judgement. Before the day ended, all was well.

My point is..

Just because people are older than me doesn’t mean that they're always right. Everyone makes mistakes. And to assume that you're always right.. ALL OF THE TIME.. that's a wee bit immature, don't you think? And just because they're older than me doesn’t give them the right to force me to believe in everything that they say. I've got a mind of my own. I will make my own choices. I will fight my own battles. In the end, I will make the decision and live my life and answer to nobody but myself. No one to blame but myself. No one to applaud but myself. And lastly, just because they’re older than me doesn’t mean I can’t challenge them, ever. I don't go around, looking for trouble, but I don't back away from a fight either, especially if I know I'm right. I will stand by what I believe in.

MATURITY doesn’t always come with age. It comes with acceptance of responsibility. That fact.. you can never question.

  1. ...and my theory about maturity that it is directly proportional w/ age is wrong. isn't it? lol.

    well said leah.

  2. @bulakbolero.sg Wow, kras. Naintriga ako. hehe.. Ano kaya yung dahilan? LOL #Chismosa..

Uhm, I'm not saying it's wrong. Yung punto ko dun.. like I said, not all the time, pwedeng gawing reason or excuse yung age para makonsider na merong "maturity" yung isang tao. My parents can be very immature, at times. LOL.. and sometimes, I think my 18-year-old cousin is very mature for his age..

Am I making sense? LOL..

  4. Precisely.

But we need not challenge them, we just need to have this firm standpoint so that they will realize that we got substance -- and we are living by it. Most of the time, seeing one person serious on his matter makes things believable. LOL. Actually, its a way of counteracting maturity, like faking it.

All the same, maturity leads to responsibility. We must be wise enough to acknowledge that these two things go side by side.

  8. The problem with maturity these days is that kids seem to think they are mature if they act like an adult. But they choose the wrong acts, when using a system that is already wrong. I think I was quite "grown up" and "mature" at an early age, but that's because I had a lot of life experience at an early age, and had been through more than anyone my age should have, it had nothing to do with kissing boys and dressing up in miniskirts and push up bras. Then again being a guy maturity would NOT be the problem if I was in a miniskirt and push up bra.

  9. Oh and well done on sticking up to your parents on an issue you thought you were right about. It helps to know when you are right, but don't forget to be able to accept when you are wrong.

  10. You couldn't have said it any better, Leah. Nakikita ko ang sarili ko sayo. Ayokong magpatalo basta alam kong nasa TAMA ako.

Thanks for the comment at lainyonline.com

    See yah!

  12. @the green breaker Lol.. "Challenge" is a bit strong, right? hihi.. Yeah, we just have to be firm, eventually they will realize that we're serious in defending our beliefs..

Maturity leads to responsibility.. That's also true. Such wise words. Thanks, Joe. :)

  16. @Mark ".... because I had a lot of life experience at an early age, and had been through more than anyone my age should have." --> True that. Love this line, Mark.

Most kids in my neighborhood, thee seem to think that they're on the "matured" state already. And then they start doing things they shouldn't.. tsk.

Yeah, thanks. I was quite proud that time. That was the very first time I did that.. I didn't back down. It was liberating, actually. But of course, never will I forget to accept and understand things, when I'm wrong.

As I've said.. we can't be right all the time. Hihi.

    Great comment, Mark. :D Thanks.

  17. @Lainy Haha! Apir! Yep, that's me. As long as I believe I'm right, I don't back down. However, I am very much willing to listen to opinions and ideas, which may contradict mine. Kapag naiisip ko ding may point sya, I guess we can have a civil conversation and come up with an agreement.. :D

Hehe, we can't be right all the time.. though we'd really like to think so. hihi.

  18. Amen to that! that's right, maturity doesn't come with age. and I am glad you were able to polished things with your parents. I will add that quote on my collections.

  19. A super mature post from super leah herself. hehe.. I agree that maturity does not come with age. People’s level of maturity depends on what they have experienced, like you said. Sometimes, I disagree with my parents too, in terms of option and decision making. I’m glad they listen to me and let me do what I think is right for me.

  20. maturity comes with it wisdom, that is, knowledge in action. Yung ibang tao, tumatanda paurong. :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. pero still, parents mo pa rin sila :)

  22. @Sey Yep. It happened a loooooooong time ago, when I was in highschool. :p It was my moment, it was liberating. :D Sure, Sey.. and thanks! :)

  23. @mayen I think it's healthy to do that.. to have a little discussion with loved ones. Mas maganda kasi nakikita yung mga differences, tsaka mas na-appreciate and individuality. hihi..

    ReplyDelete
  24. @rah Haha!! Tamah.. hihi. I know some people who are like that. lol..

Love your line. Thanks for sharing that, too.. Rah. :)

  25. @Bino true.. but that doesn't mean I'd just nod my head in agreement every single time...

  26. maturity sometimes does not come with the age...minsan it's the way you act and the way you perceive life

    ReplyDelete
  27. You're right! And it's totally confusing for me. Here you are, a person of 17, with your own life, thoughts, decisions and goals. Everybody thinks you're way too small for living on your own and in then you turn 18 and ..wow!.. luggage of responsibility on your shoulders!

  28. Smart quote and very well supported :)
I know a lot of old people who have no idea what they are talking about.

  31. Spot on, maturity is not directly proportional to age. Maturity though I think, depends on the person's experiences.

    Great post Leah! :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. i agree that maturity shouldn't be relative to age, just what the commercial said, "age is just a number"...

    nice post po! :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. speaking of which. I just hate those mature people around school. they sucks! they're too immature to understand a lot of things and yet would always blurt about us being so immature. stupid. lol. now! I'm angry! hahaha!

parang angry birds eh no? haha!

    ReplyDelete
  34. plus, I think "maturity" has nothing to do with age (because if it does, it's not maturity but superiority), I think it has something to do with experience and how stable you are in terms of making decision (wise) and how smart you are also. lol..^_^

  35. I agree! Maturity has nothing to do with age. It comes to being responsible. :) (oh-ha!)

  36. This is also applicable to the corporate world.

  37. I agree with what you said Leah. kung equivalent ng age ang maturity e di ang mature mature ko na sana :)

  40. @The girl of the sun LOL.. It's sad that people think that when you're 17, you're not old enough to do "mature" things.. and then when you reach the ripe age of 18, you're already mature.. Tsk. It's not all about the age, really.

  41. @Lorena Thanks. I found that quote on Tumblr, and I just added a few of my ideas. :D

  42. @Diamond R Yes, Kuya.. Ganun. hehe.. :P

    Salamat, Kuya Rommel. :D

  46. @Mai Yang Haha.. angry birds nga. lol.. Oo nga eh. Kaasar diba?

Dami kasing mga old people na ganun, they think they're right all the time kasi matatanda na sila. In some cases, that's true. Meron kasing mga bata pa, bugbog na sa life-changing experiences, forcing them to grow up and be mature for their age...

    ReplyDelete
  47. @lonewolf haha! Work issues.. hehe. Merong old people na ayaw sumunod sa younger boss.. meron ding young people na nag-aasta mature na kasi sila raw ang boss. lol..

Ginagawang excuse yung age, anoh? lol..

    ReplyDelete
  48. @ZaiZai Hahahahaha!! Ako din! lol.. kung ganun nga, eh di super-duper mature na talaga yung parents ko, tapos ako.. mature to the 3rd level na. harharhar..

    ReplyDelete
  49. @bechay Thanks.. Sure thing. Checking your blog now. :)

Tsk!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Sometimes we overlook maturity with respect to age, which, as is truly identified by the scribblers above, is not an appropriate way of interconnecting them. Maybe, yes, age can play a role in maturity [when one is really old], but I believe that it comes with the life lessons that we imbibe everyday. One person might have experienced less than the other, and there lies the difference.

    Great post, missy.

  52. Maturity is not equivalent to age.

for me maturity is the capability to comprehend and understand things that is way beyond your grasp. It is somehow proportional as open-mindedness and thinking outside the box.
