Religion

I don't really like having discussions about religion on my blog. It's a very sensitive subject. But I saw this video on YouTube and I said to myself that this is worth the share. It's a very powerful poem made by Jefferson Bethke, on the difference between God and religion.

"A poem I wrote to highlight the difference between Jesus and false religion. In the scriptures Jesus received the most opposition from the most religious people of his day. At it's core Jesus' gospel and the good news of the Cross is in pure opposition to self-righteousness/self-justification. Religion is man centered, Jesus is God-centered. This poem highlights my journey to discover this truth. Religion either ends in pride or despair. Pride because you make a list and can do it and act better than everyone, or despair because you can't do your own list of rules and feel "not good enough" for God. With Jesus though you have humble confident joy because He represents you, you don't represent yourself and His sacrifice is perfect putting us in perfect standing with God! - Jefferson Bethke

Of course, we have different opinions on things. I agree with Jefferson when he said that people sometimes build facades to mask their imperfections because their religion tells them that these sins make them unworthy. But I disagree with religion starting wars. I believe that it is the IGNORANCE of the people and total disrespect of religions that do start wars. And to say that Jesus hate religion..? I think "hate"is such a strong word.

Another poem was also written (and uploaded on YouTube, as well) as a response to the video.

"I agree with a lot of what this guy said, but I do have some sharp disagreements with him. - Trent Horn"

What's your say on this?

    1. Yeah, I think the bottomline is that we should fear God.. Everything else will just follow.

  3. I'm currently in a hard transition period about my faith and religion. For a year, I tried to regain or rekindle my Catholic faith but one thing leads to another.

I'm still undecided on what will this bring about.

    Thanks for sharing these vids!

    Cheers.

  4. "Calling somebody blind does not automatically give you vision" Ang powerful ng dating, it can really move you. Dito sa Pilipinas para siyang (jeff) yung sa mga flip top battle, yung mga modern rapper. "Religion is man's response to God" good point from Trent. Pareho naman silang may point. I remember one time yung ate ko nag-aatend siya ng christian services, pero ako kasi catholic. One day dinalaw siya nung "sister" nila. Tapos habang nanunuod ng TV bigla niya ko kinausap then binigyan ng lessons about bible. Yung pinaka nag-struck sakin that time sabi ni sister "It doesn't matter kung anong religion mo, what's important eh yung relationship mo kay Lord." Pero after nun I remained catholic, kasi sabi niya nga nasa relationship naman yan.. hehe share lang

    1. Oh that's so true, Jhengpot. Kasi iba-iba tayo ng paniniwala, iba-iba ang relihiyon.. Ang importante lang talaga, meron tayong takot sa Diyos na ating pinaniniwalaan, at ang ating relasyon sa Kanya.. Amen. :)

  5. I've tried to avoid religion on my blog too after the few attempts I've had on there didn't go down so well. I have faith in God and Jesus, but no I'm not a big fan of religion. I think it can spread a good message though. Like everything, there are going to be dicks who will exploit it for their own gain. It's not really religions fault, and certainly not God's, that assholes have decided what His will is, and have decided to fight under his banner when the scriptures clearly state that you shouldn't fight.

  8. ang galing naman ni Jefferson, sobrang convincing ...
pero i think wala naman sa religion ang problem...religions give us guides and practices to be closer to God...what's wrong is we people are not consistent of being good,,,
kaya nga sabi nila...religion doesnt really matter...what matters is how you treat God by your doings as you live...

  9. Ayun sa wakas nagload din ang comment box haist. Promise ko sayo Ms. Leah babalikan ko to.

"Calling someone blind doesn't automatically gives you vision" yan ang tumatak sa utak ko sa lahat ng sinabi niya. If I am right, religion is our relationship with God. How we profess our faith and how we practice it, hindi lang pag may nakakakita and hindi natin kailangan ipagsigawan sa mundo. It is our personal relationship with God to be more specific. It doesn't mean palagi kang nagsisimba daig mo ang pagkatao ng iba at ikaw lang maliligtas.

More often, religions were being judged based on what people see/witnessed with the practitioner. And bakit kailangang mag-away away? Dun siguro nagsisimula yung ang isang believer nakakalimutan niya kung ano ang dapat niyang gawin with his faith.

Naalala ko dati, palaging may dumadating na isang religion sa bahay and we're accepting them in our home to read the bible. We listened but we remained true to our faith and they respected it. Sayang nga lang we lost contact nung nag-aral ako sa ibang lugar.

  11. Religion and politics are the two things that people tend to avoid talking about because so many people have different views and don't respect each others, for the most part. I have to agree with many of the things the man in the first video said. I've witnessed so many religions tearing each other down and calling the other ones cults. This is totally unacceptable to me. So many of them believe that they are the ONLY one that is on the 'straight and narrow path' to heaven.

Religion separates people instead of unifying them. This isn't what God wanted for us and that is my belief. Ironically, I just told my mother a few days ago that I am not religious for many of the reasons discussed here. I am a spiritual person and I have my own beliefs ~ that is enough for me.

I happen to respect all religions and beliefs. It's a shame that my introduction to religion (in a Christian High School) left me with a bitter taste in my mouth. They were the most hypocritical, prejudice, and phony people I've ever met in my entire life. Sorry for the long comment. Thanks for allowing me to vocalize my thoughts on a very controversial topic :-)

  12. I'm very comfortable about my beliefs. I respect other people's religion as long as they do not wave it right in front of my face and judge me in the process the minute they find out what I believe in.
