Judge Me. Don't Judge Me. Whatever.

Isn't judging just human nature? What do YOU think? The below quotes resonate so deeply in me.

"You shouldn't be ashamed of judging people, it is both normal, necessary, and useful provided that they are appropriate. I judge people all of the time. I'm judging you now. I am determining who is good or bad, intelligent, possessing of good taste, attractive, interesting, social pariah, etc. I think it important, though, to readjust judgment according to new information. And you're judging me now too." - Keresth D'Araciel

"We all judge. Those that say they don't are full of $%^#. They may accept someone that others don't but they still judged to make that acceptance. People who claim not to be judgmental are lying to everyone especially themselves. I judge where everyone judges from. It stems from my own moral compass, past experience, prejudices, facts or lack thereof, the society I live in, the law, and yes emotion." - Stephen Smith

I've also quoted Walt Whitman before as well: "Be curious, not judgmental."

I believe in ALL of these powerful words! Why do so many judgmental people equate judging with something negative, derogatory, immoral or wrong? Hell, I judge myself all the time. Perhaps some of us perceive the word in different ways?

I can see where in some cases curiosity trumps judgement whereas in other situations judgement is perfectly normal and natural even though we may not be conscious that we're doing it; we are, in my opinion. Naturally, we don't enjoy being judged, but we have no problem doing it ourselves: See Hypocrisy.

Like Stephen Smith implied, I just think some people are full of themselves and need a platform to be self-congratulatory while smugly looking down on others preaching of being non-judgmental all the while being well, ....judgmental.

Humility > self-righteousness.

We cannot please everyone. Not everyone can possibly like us. I cannot like everyone, and if I don't like you, I probably judged you negatively by your actions that rubbed me the wrong way or how you articulated yourself. And if I like you, I judged you positively due to your behavior toward others and myself. I think we all are similarly hard-wired. If not, we wouldn't be alive, I'd think.

Some people judge over super-duper ridiculous things such as the kind of music you listen to. They're not being as judgmental as they are being superficial and anti-social.

[End]

I think that everyone passes judgement. I judge myself everyday. People judge me everyday. I judge people everyday.. by the way they talk, the way they act. But as much as we want to judge people by their behavior and actions, most of the time, we allow appearances to cloud our judgment. Sometimes, we can't help but belittle others as inferior.

Having this right to judge, one still needs decorum and manners. I can't just walk to the person and say "Your outfit sucks!". Yeah, so I'm judging him to be one with very poor fashion sense. It's uncool and superficial but hey, at least I'm not being a hypocrite about it. I just try to be mature about it and tell him without really hurting his feelings or making him feel inferior... or better yet, I don't talk at all.

Uh...

You're judging me right now, aren't you? Oh, gosh.

  1. Like said, it's normal to judge people, especially at first glance. But you shouldn't put too much faith in that first impression, and that's where a lot of people go wrong.

    1. True that! Some people put their best foot forward, some people don't. To many, it's a strategy. And with everything's that is happening to the world today, it's quite hard to spot a "true" person..So it's essential to dig deep. One can't really trust first impressions..

  2. I feel like being judgement destroys our self esteem. Is that just me?

  3. Judging a person doesn't define who they are. It defines who you are.

I also got same topic Leah :)

  4. Don't judge others based on appearances. If you have the right to judge, others deserves the benefit of the doubt. A suspect cannot be called criminal unless proven guilty. So judging comes with great responsibility for you can destroy others life. Remember this, for the measure you used, you will be measured!

  6. Well I'm judging you but not harshly :P There is a positive side to judging, but most people do see it only as a negative thing. Like criticism, there's such a thing as positive and constructive criticism, but most people see it only as a bad thing. I try not to judge too much though, and certainly not too harshly.

    1. Exactly my point. Thanks, Mark. People associate the word "judging" or "judgement" to something negative. But it's not really true.

Yeah.. I try my best to not judge too harshly. My mom taught me to be a good girl. *grins*

    1. I suppose. Pero minsan kasi, hindi natin alam, we pass judgement na based on appearances only. Like.. when we see a fat person, we then think na malakas syang kumain or matakaw sya. Which is superficial.. kasi most obese people have root problems that ran deeper than that. Physiological, maybe.. Psychological.

      Tch. Ganun tlga.

Hm, I think what you said is true, most of the time we can't help but judge others and ourselves.
What I don't like is when people judge others by stereotyping.
I wrote a guest post about it here: http://musingsbyjodie.blogspot.com/2011/11/stereotypes-by-purplemist.html
read it if you have time! :)

  12. It's hard to realize that almost nobody judges himself as much as he judges the surrounding area, society and even friends. I consider this topic to be very depressive.

  13. I agree that we judge others all the time... Whether it's done in the correct compass or not, it's still judging others... Perhaps what the familiar proverb is admonishing us about judging others is not to entirely get rid of it, but rather to proceed with kindness, and to always give others the benefit of the doubt... :)

So, in effect, when the Good Book tells us "not to judge others so that we will not also be judged" means that the moral compass by which we render judgment to others should also be the same moral compass with which we set our personal standards... Furthermore, this moral saying should not be taken in isolation - it is but a subset of the maxim of loving our neighbors as ourselves...

Thus, if one forms an initial impression towards others, the compass whether to adhere to it or not is to ask whether we would want that same impression rendered to us - if it's negative, discard it; if it's positive, keep it as part of that courtesy to always act in kindness. After all, we all want to be kept in good thoughts by others... :)

  16. being judgemental doesn't make one a bad person naman. you're just expressing the truth and nothing but the truth and so truth hurts talaga. but sometimes we should rather stay silent nalang if you don't know the person kasi. if you know the person naman, don't stab her at the back. say it directly to her in a constructive critic way, give suggestions and etc. if she asks why, be responsible enough to supply all the answers she needs from you without digging too much so to avoid long discussions that might lead to quarrels. what if others are being judgemental towards you? maybe it's time to look at the mirror and find out if it's true or not. good day!

  18. oh, When i opened you blog i judged you. When i read your post i judged you and just like what you said, the judgement will differ on what is being judged, and i judge that you'll be my friend and i hope to see you in my blog. Plus, yes what you wrote is all true, we judge, tell and prank people in a correct and proper manner still. :)

  19. I think as humans we are naturally curious, some call it being nosey. There's nothing with that We judge all the time; picking a seat on the bus, who should you sit next to? Picking someone to play on your team. Offering someone a job etc etc. The list is endless. It happens. But I think it takes a greater person to judge, yet not base their dealings and further interaction with that person on their initial judgements.

    1. So true, Nas. We judge all the time.. What pen to use, what dress to wear, what route to take. And I agree.. just like what Fang said. The first impressions usually create an impact, but they're rarely true. So just like you said, it does take a greater person to judge and not base their interaction on their initial impression.

  20. I agree.. Whether we admit it or not we judge people. I am guilty of judging too. But it's true that we should readjust our judgement according to new information.. Love this post. :)

  22. I think all of us, in one way or another, have judged others once in our lives. I think dapat i-lugar na lang and we should keep it to ourselves na lang. That way we won't hurt someone's feelings. Ay, ewan ko lang din pala. LOL
