OUAT: Broken

Magic has come to Storybrooke.

Indeed. The show Once Upon A Time premiered last Sunday, September 30 on ABC. It was one of the most anticipated TV premiers. A lot has tuned in to their television sets just to witness the famous purple smoke envelope Storybrooke and bring magic back to the town.

So. To those who have watched the season premier, what do you think? Did the episode deliver? Was it any good? Share your thoughts, as I will share mine.

It was good. Fairly decent first episode, in my humble opinion. Though I'd have to stress out a few of my disappointments.

First. The writers explored the story of Aurora or Sleeping Beauty. I had expected to see Aurora in the second season because it only makes sense. The Sleeping Beauty story revolves around the idea of the true love's kiss, breaking any kind of spell, even sleeping death. However, having Aurora there, I had expected to see a glimpse of the elegant villain, Maleficent. Though they did mention Maleficent's name, it was a bit disappointing that one of the greatest villains of all time did not have any screen time.

Second thing. The wraith. In my opinion, they should have used a darker creature or a darker plot to rid of Regina. That wraith gave a Harry-Potter feel to the episode. First thing that popped into mind as I saw the wraith.. Dementor. Some would even advise J.K. Rowling to call her lawyer because the episode was like a Harry Potter rip off.

Third. I just find Aurora's character so annoying. I don't know why but she got under my skin. Maybe because of her voice. Or her attitude towards Mulan. Yes, Mulan was thrown into the mix. She and Prince Phillip traveled and fought battles together. They maintained a deep friendship, though Mulan has secret feelings for the Prince. Apparently, Aurora was not pleased at all when she found out that her Prince Charming was with a woman while she gets her sleep, though it was fairly obvious that Prince Phillip only has eyes on her. What a .. pfft. Never mind.

Though I have my little disappointments, I'd still say that this is a good starter. And I still am looking forward to see the upcoming episodes of the show. There are lots of unanswered questions, especially with the twists and the new characters.

I would love to see how the relationship between Snow White and Emma progresses. Mother and daughter. There were some awkward moments in the first episode. Wonder how they'll deal. Hm. Also, the relationship between Mr. Gold and Belle. The beauty and the beast.

The best part of the show, I think.. is when Emma Swan touched Regina and then, the evil Queen gained her magic back. I've always thought that Emma will have some kind of power since she is a product of magic, herself. Snow White and Prince Charming. She came from Fairy tale Land.

Also, I'm really curious about Dr. Whale. This is the burning question. Who is he? He said that Prince James is -not- his prince. Curious. Maybe he's Dr. Frankenstein, the man who created the monster. Why? Well. He's a doctor. So that's that. And the 1931 Frankenstein movie was created by a James Whale. I'm not sure about this, though. It'll be pretty hard to link Frankenstein to OUAT since it's not a fairy tale story  It's more of a science fiction.

And who was the first guy.. the unnamed guy in New York city who got that Storybrooke postcard that only says "Broken" at the back? Could it be that Mr. Gold/Rumpelstiltskin . known for his sneaky endless plots, be able to send a message to Bae, his son? Or maybe it was Jefferson, the Mad Hatter.. who sent it to the White Rabbit?

I'm sure these questions will be answered in the next episodes of the show. All in all, it was a fairly decent starter.  Magic has indeed come to Storybrooke.

  1. I'm sorry to hear that you didn't really enjoy the show Leah that's a real shame, I get what you mean about the wraiths sounding similar to Dementors too, that is a little annoying.

    1. Yes, I am! :)

The writers are great! I really love the first season. When I saw the pilot, I was instantly hooked! I'm really curious as to who Dr. Whale is. There are rumors saying that he may be Hook. And the casting of a Colin O’Donoghue was just part of the strategy to throws the fans off Whale's case. Not sure. These are just speculations. :)

Yeah. I was a bit disappointed that they used the Wraith. I'm not saying that it's wrong, just maybe.. it would have been better if they used a different plot to try to rid of Regina? Having similar ideas does not necessarily mean that the show ripped off HP. Though some may think of it that way.

Oh, well. Looking forward to see the next episodes! :)

  6. Well they might be saving Maleficent, you don't know :) I didn't see the episode though, or the first season, so I probably shouldn't be commenting on it :P

  7. My family got rid of telly several years ago so I'm not familiar with this show. I stopped by to say hello as I'm a follower of Mark. You are indeed a good friend to that nice young man.

  8. Never heard of this show let alone watch the first season.

Not sure I'll have time to start it though. What with Community and the third season of Sherlock starting soon.
