Guest Post: Learning and Education

Educational Guest Post

I've talked before on my own blog about the subject of education. So I'm going to see what I can do about it on this blog. A totally unnecessary thank you to Leah first of all though for allowing me to do this. I was always taught to be nice to women, so I actually suppose that is not totally unnecessary, and is slightly related to the subject of education.

See, education, and learning, doesn't stop at school, not by a long shot. I've made some things on that quite clear. I want compulsory school education to end at 14. In this country (England) at 14 you pick certain subjects, and do those, while still doing the mandatory English, Maths and Science. I actually didn't do that great at English literature (writing) and look at me now, I have a blog where many praise me for my writing skills, and I've written a few short stories and am working on a longer story.

I think instead that at fourteen you should be able to go into a trade school. School is not for everyone, so if you take those people, and put them in say, mechanical school, get them in garages and learning other skills, such as how to maintain cars, or other trade schools. Like plumbing.

Another thing you learn at school is social skills. You learn how you should deal with people (though some schools do this wrong). Your time at school can really define you as a person.

I like how I started by saying that education doesn't end at the end of school, and intended to keep going like that, but in the end didn't. Learning is something that goes on all through your life. Inside and outside of school. So remember, don't ever assume you know everything. You might know a lot, but there's still a lot you don't know.

Remember again, the path to true knowledge is knowing that you know nothing. I don't know if that's actually how it goes, which means I'm closer to knowing everything than you.

- Mark

  2. i agree na dapat sa school parang may option to let you learn skills that will help you in someways when you get older.

The problem in philippine education is that it's main focus is plain academics. It only deals with your scores and all but it doesn't allow the students to bring out the best of them.

Students are like natural gems..... not yet polished and would never shine unless we provide them care and guidance.

  3. I changed my perspective in terms of education and learning after reading Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki. Poor Dad focuses on the conventional learning - academe based, where Rich Dad teaches a living, and how you can enjoy life.

Instead of me blaming the educational system of the country, I strongly feel the need to have parents that are learned and skilled to teach their kids in managing matters of finance. For me, that's fundamental. Because a person who is learned to handle finances, can always be successful in any field he/she chooses. It might not be absolute, but is quite certain and probable.

  6. I certainly agree to this post. Since learning does not only occur inside the four walls of the classroom then it is not an imperative for us to learn things outside it. Learning does not stop when we earn a degree in college, or a master's or doctor's degree, it is a life-long process! I am currently an Education student and as a future teacher, I should encourage my learners not to stay stagnant on their own learning. They must be encourage to delve the outside and learn things that are not taught within the class room. More power to you Mark and to you Leah.

  13. Very thought-provoking guest post Mark!
I agree that school is not for everyone, and it often stops students from reaching their full potential which they could achieve by focusing on what they actually like to do.

  19. Education is a lifelong process. Being an educated person doesn't mean you have to finish some academic degree. I think it has something to do with how you carry yourself and more importantly how you deal with others. And these we learn to do from our life's experiences.

Howdy, Leah? I hope all is well. Thank you so much for greeting me on my blog's anniversary. It is very much appreciated.

Take care and God bless, iha.

  20. true. :-) what we learn sa school... maliit na part lang sya sa mahabang buhay natin sa mundo. one more thing, bakit may good manners and right conduct or the like na subject and yet, students don' t apply it sa buhay nila.

  21. what else can I say?

oh! I actually hate school. for me, it just a waste of money. I can actually learn everything in school/internet, plus, not to set aside the fact that not all teacher's are that "dedicated" to their works and it sucks. I mean, whatever. hahaha!

but yeah, I'm not saying I didn't learn anything but I'm just saying..idk. hahahaha! blah blah blah!

  23. I love learning... but I hate studying. Haha, it may sound rather immature to some, but I have my reasons. I mean, it's not like I hated school. I loved it--when it was on the side of learning. I like learning things on my own, because I want to, and not because I'm required to do so. Aaaah I hope I'm making sense. :)) Nice post by the way Leah! :)

  24. agreed, for me after college I'm still a guy without knowledge of my future work and guess what that is what I'm experiencing right now. But even though I have very little knowledge of where I am right now I'm learning slowly but surely.

  25. another two-thumbs up guest post! :D well, i too strongly believe that learning doesn't stay inside the 4 corners of the classroom. sa 26 years kong paglalakad lakad sa mundo, mas marami akong natutunan sa kalsada kesa sa classroom, haha :D

  31. wisdom that we acquire in education is the greatest asset that cannot be robbed to us by someone....

  32. Learning is a continuous process. If you stop learning it's like the end of the world for you. We have to keep up with what's new and what we must know and learn even if we are ages and miles away from school. :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. yeah! it doesn't..even in blogging, online, we can learn and we can be educated too..

    ReplyDelete
  34. The academic part of your learning does stop at school. But the rest doesn't. Like growing up, meeting the demands of your job and facing your problems. Those are the things which are not taught at school but must be learned anyway.

  35. I suddenly remember what my old teacher said. Being educated is not about finishing college or getting a doctorate degree... it is the application of what you learned from those institutions in your daily life.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I totally agree on the last two lines. When we think that we are knowledgeable enough, we don't open ourselves to learning other things because we thought of ourselves as better than what we have just read or learned. We need to empty a cup first before we could fill it again.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Learn by engaging in your community and never stop gaining knowledge, school is just preparing us what we can learn a lot more outside school.

    ReplyDelete
  38. True. Education doesn't stop at school. learning is everywhere and it's up to you to appreciate things outside that could help you learn.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I do really think learning never really stops. Though my mom is old, there are already things that she didn't know, information never stops and keeps on growing and changes. So learning would never stop...well, unless we're dead.

Some parents also lean too much on schools and reason out that they're paying for the education of their kids. There are things that cannot be done by the teachers but actually the parents.
